On Saturday, March 23, 2013 the California Scholarship Federation (CSF) and California Junior Scholarship Federation (CJSF) hosted their annual Conference at Fallon Middle School in Dublin, California. This year’s conference theme was “Believe, Relieve, Achieve: Creating the balance between your mind, body and school.” The conference format involved a keynote address followed by approximately 30 technology and wellness workshops for the over 250 teens, parents and community members in attendance.
On the day of the event, the organizers were informed that the keynote speaker had fallen ill. With very little notice, the organizers asked Hillary Burke, a Hume Center Doctoral Intern in the School Based Prevention and Early Childhood and Family Services programs, if she would be willing to deliver the keynote speech. After brief deliberation, Hillary agreed to deliver the address based on the workshop that she had prepared for later in the day. Hillary exhibited great poise, and courage in delivering the address to over 250 attendees!! Way to go Hillary, we are all very proud of and inspired by you.
We also wanted to acknowledge her Hume Center peers, Jennifer Rodriguez and Shannon Stovall, and her supervisor who were all in attendance that day to support Hillary. It takes a team and a lot of support to do this work, especially public speaking to hundreds of teens with little notice!! Thank you Hillary, Shannon and Jennifer for representing The Hume Center so well.
